for Meera

Two Years of Us

everything, in order, since the bus stop

from Aarav

March, two years ago

the day we met

You were arguing with the ticket machine at the bus stop and losing. I had exact change and no idea what to say, so I just held it out. You said thanks like we already knew each other.

the long weekend in October

our first trip

We booked it eleven days in advance and packed nothing useful. It rained for two of the three days and we did not care once.

January, and it was six months

the airport goodbye

You went through the gate and then came back out to say one more thing and I have never told you that I could not hear it. I said yes anyway.

still

the thing you always do

You read the last page first. Every book, every time, and then you read the whole thing anyway. You do not know I notice.

last week

a normal Tuesday together

Nothing happened. You made too much rice, we watched forty minutes of something neither of us was following, and you fell asleep on the wrong end of the sofa. That is the one I would keep.

Meera,

Two years is not very long. People keep telling me that, and they are right, and it does not help at all, because I cannot remember the shape of the ones before it.

What I have never told you is that I nearly did not offer you the change. I had it in my hand for about four seconds first, working out whether it would be strange. Everything above happened because four seconds went one way instead of the other.

In five years I want a kitchen where we both know where things go, and I want to still be the person you come back through the gate to tell one more thing to.

You can keep reading the last page first.

All my love, Aarav

Aarav made this for you.
